Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Short in Game 211 of The Rivalry

The Hope College men's basketball team challenged late to keep a four-game winning streak at Calvin University's Van Noord Arena alive before falling, 69-61, on Wednesday night.

After falling behind 15 points midway through the first half, the Flying Dutchmen pulled as close as four points three times over the final 4 minutes, 21 seconds.

The fourth-ranked Knights turned away Hope's bids to make it a one-possession game in Game 211 of The Rivalry and emerged as one of two teams to remain unbeaten in MIAA play.

Calvin, which snapped the Flying Dutchmen's six-game winning streak, is now 15-1 overall and 5-0 in MIAA games and tied for first place with Trine University. Hope (12-4 overall) fell to 4-1 in league play.

Hope still leads the all-time series with Calvin, 109-102.

"It was an interesting game," head coach Greg Mitchell said. "If you love shooting, it was a hard game to watch. A combined 8-of-45 from 3, and we're 2-of-22. Just rough from the free-throw line [ 19-of-31]. I love our comeback. I love our toughness in the second half. We were a play or two away from making it very interesting. I thought they played just well enough to win."

Calvin led the entire game. The Knights jumped to a 10-2 lead in the first 5 ½ minutes and went ahead by as many as 15 points during the first half.

Hope trailed 34-23 at halftime while shooting 28.1% from the field (9-32) and 7.7% from 3-point range (1-13).

"We just did not come out and play a focused first half. Give them some credit for being a little more aggressive," Mitchell said. "I just thought we settled for too many poor shots, too many shots off the bounce. Just didn't make some plays we needed to establish some comfort and confidence."

The Flying Dutchmen clawed back in the second half, cutting Calvin's lead to four points for the first time on two free throws from senior forward Tanner Wiegerink (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa HS) with 4:21 remaining. Calvin's Uchenna Egekeze responded with a layup on the next possession.

Two free throws from senior TJ McKenzie (Muskegon, Michigan / North Muskegon) trimmed Calvin's lead to 60-56 with 3:15 remaining. The Flying Dutchmen delivered a defensive stop, but missed a drive to the paint on its possession that would have brought them within two.

A Wiegerink 3-point play with 1:34 made the Calvin lead 63-59 with 1:34 remaining, but the Knights' Jalen Overway responded with a trip to the line that pushed Calvin's lead to six again.

Both teams put four players in double figures. Overway topped the Knights with a game-high 14 points.

Junior center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) led Hope with 14 points.

Three Flying Dutchmen finished with 10 points apiece: Wiegerink despite only 16-plus minutes due to foul trouble, sophomore guard Marcus Wourman (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) and McKenzie.

Hope hosts seventh-ranked Trine on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse.

"We'll have to have a short-term memory," Mitchell said. "We'll have to bounce back and get ready for Trine on Saturday."
