Men's Basketball Falls at Third-Ranked Trine

The Hope College men's basketball team lost at third-ranked Trine University, 64-53, on Wednesday night.

The Flying Dutchmen (14-6, 6-3 MIAA) slipped out of a tie for second place in the MIAA standings but still lead fourth-place Adrian College and Alma College by two games. 

The top six teams qualify for next month's MIAA Tournament. The top two seeds earn first-round byes.

Trine (19-1, 9-0 MIAA) outscored Hope by a 31-22 margin after halftime.

The Thunder forced Hope into a season-high 24 turnovers and limited the Flying Dutchmen to a season-low 48 field-goal attempts. Hope also matched its season-low with eight free-throw attempts.

Senior forward Tanner Wiegerink (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa HS) topped the Flying Dutchmen with 14 points, six blocks, six rebounds and three steals.

Senior guard Clayton Dykhouse (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) chipped in 11 points and four assists.

Junior center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) and junior forward Ben Wagar (Harbor Springs, Michigan / Petoskey) added nine points apiece.

Trine, which leads second-place Calvin University by two games in the MIAA standings, received 14 points from guard Fred Garland, 13 from forward Brent Cox and 11 from forward Aidan Smylie.

Senior forward Emmanuel Megnanglo contributed 10 rebounds, eight points, three blocks and three steals for the Thunder.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m. at Kalamazoo College.
