Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Alan Babbitt

No. 15-Ranked Men's Soccer Wins at Kalamazoo by a Familiar Score

A familiar result flashed on the scoreboard at the end of the Hope College men's soccer team at Kalamazoo College on Tuesday night.

The 15th-ranked Flying Dutch welcomed the sight.

Hope defeated Kalamazoo by a 2-1 margin for the third consecutive time, a stretch dating back to the 2022 season.

Second-half goals from sophomore Josh Weigel and freshman Jackson Mindling stood up for the Flying Dutchmen, who improved to 10-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in MIAA play.

Hope seized sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings after Adrian College played to a scoreless draw against Albion College on Wednesday and dropped into third place.

With seven points, the Flying Dutchmen trail Trine University (6-6, 3-0 MIAA).

"I'm really proud of the guys for getting a gutsy win in a really tough Kalamazoo environment," head coach David Blahnik said. "We were confident at halftime we were going to get some goals as we were playing incredibly well in the first half and I think one of our better halves of the season in regards to moving the ball and defending.

"We were just missing the final piece of scoring. This team has shown us all season that they'll continue to find a way and scrap, and we had total confidence at halftime that they were going to find a way to get it done and they did."

Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central HS) put Hope on the board 12 minutes, 13 seconds into the second half with his third goal of the season.

After an initial Kalamazoo save, freshman Ryker Corstange (Richland, Michigan / Gull Lake) gathered the rebound near the back line, turned and sent it out to Weigel

Standing from outside of the penalty area, Weigel settled the ball and dribbled briefly before blasting a right-footed shot into the top right corner of the net.

Mindling (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) doubled up Hope's lead in the 73rd minute by scoring for a team-leading ninth time this season.

Kalamazoo (4-8-1, 1-2 MIAA) failed to clear a Flying Dutchmen corner, and the ball landed at Mindling's feet in the penalty area. Mindling quickly kicked the ball into the net through traffic.

"It was great to have Josh back after a few weeks off due to injury," Blahnik said. "Josh and Jackson both scored unbelievable goals."

The goal proved critical for Hope as Kalamazoo's Henry Blumstead converted a penalty kick 1 ½ minutes later.

The Hornets mustered only two more shots before time ran out. The Flying Dutchmen extended their lead in the competitive series to 52-47-7.
