Women's Soccer Stuns Adrian with Two Late Goals, Wins Showdown

Hope clinches an MIAA Tournament berth with a home victory

Ainsley Harris gathered herself after an encroachment call wiped off her successful penalty kick for the Hope College women's soccer team.

Late in a scoreless duel with Adrian College, the junior forward converted a second time and sparked the second-place Flying Dutch to a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs on Tuesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope scored twice during the final 7 minutes, 49 seconds, to clinch one of six spots in next month's MIAA Tournament. The Orange and Blue also bolstered its bid to claim one of two first-round byes.

The Flying Dutch (10-3-1, 5-1-0 MIAA) remain five points ahead of third-place Adrian (9-3-1, 3-1-1) and Trine University (8-4-3, 3-2-1) with road games against Kalamazoo College and Saint Mary's College remaining.

Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian HS) broke a scoreless tie in the 83rd minute.

Senior Carley Wagasky (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) drew a foul in the box while attempting to get a foot on a cross, giving Hope a PK.

Harris made her first attempt cleanly but had to re-do the try after one of her teammates was called for moving into the box too early.

The second time, Harris blasted a right-footed shot past a diving Gabby Revels in the right corner of the goal for her fifth goal of the season.

"Anyone who takes a penalty kick, half of it is mental," head coach Holly Van Noord said. "To stay composed shows her mental strength. I think her preparation and character carried her through."

Wagasky sealed the outcome by scoring her MIAA-leading 10th goal of the season with 55 seconds remaining.

The chemistry major eluded an Adrian defender on the end line, setting up a 1-on-1 with the Adrian keeper. Wagasky deked left then shot right, perfectly centering a low shot between Revels and the right post.

Hope's defense came through as well.

The Flying Dutch limited Adrian to seven shots. Senior goalkeeper Kendall Robertson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) made three saves, including two point-blank ones after halftime with the score still scoreless.

Van Noord was proud of her team's performance, especially considering what was at stake against a quality opponent, led by former All-MIAA Flying Dutchmen soccer honoree Nathan Kronewetter.

"We talked about how some games are going to require a relentless attack. It's going to take the extra effort, the extra runs," Van Noord said. "I thought we never let up on that. I am very proud of their effort and execution."

Hope's next game is Saturday, Oct. 26, at noon at Kalamazoo. The Hornets are coming off a 6-1 loss at Calvin that clinched the top seed in the league tournament for the Knights.
