Women's Soccer Blanks Saint Mary's, Secures No. 2 Seed for MIAA Tournament

The Hope College women's soccer team clinched a first-round bye in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament Wednesday night by blanking Saint Mary's College, 2-0, on the Belles' home pitch in Notre Dame, Indiana.

With the win, Hope finished second in the MIAA standings with a 6-1-1 regular season conference record, good for 19 points.

The Flying Dutch are now 11-3-2 overall on the season.

The MIAA Tournament field is scheduled to be announced on Thursday, Oct. 31.

Hope will host a semifinal game in the MIAA tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at a time to be announced at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. The Flying Dutch will face the winner of the opening round contest between the No. 3 and No. 6 seeded teams in the tournament.

On Wednesday, Hope took the play to Saint Mary's early on, resulting in three corner kicks during the game's first nine minutes.

The Flying Dutch finally broke through and found the net at the 10-minute, 15-second mark on a goal by junior midfielder Liz Bellinger (Williamston, Michigan / Williamston HS), her second in two games and her third goal on the season.

Hope continued to keep the pressure on the Belles after Bellinger's goal, finishing the first half with seven corner kicks and holding Saint Mary's without a shot.

The relentless pressure finally paid dividends in the 41
st minute. Senior forward Margaret Owsiany (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) scored her third goal of the season to give the Flying Dutch a 2-0 lead.

From there, Hope kept Saint Mary's at bay, outshooting the Belles 9-4 for the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Kendall Robertson (Jackson, Michigan/Parma Western) recorded her third shutout of the season and lowered her goals-against average to 0.91.

Robertson made one save. The Belles fell to 2-5-1 in the MIAA and 7-8-1 overall.
