No. 2 Volleyball Gets to the Point, Sets Up NCAA Regional Semifinal Rematch

The Hope College volleyball team went right to the point.

The second-ranked Flying Dutch quickly seized command of an NCAA Division III Tournament first-round match on Friday and marched past Greenville University (Illinois) in three sets at DeVos Fieldhouse.

With a 25-7, 25-16, 25-18 victory, Hope (26-2) advanced to face the University of Wisconsin-Stevens-Point (20-11) in the regional semifinals on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. The rematch of a 2023 regional semifinal that the Flying Dutch won in five sets will air exclusively on ncaa.com.

"The two words we focused on were gratitude and opportunity," said junior outside hitter Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township HS), whose team never trailed in the first set and raced out to a 17-3 lead. "The first set we started off saying we were really grateful to be here and playing this game because it is a gift.

"In the third set, we said opportunity because every single game we have, even though we might be playing well, we [can] use every point as an opportunity to get better. We can still sharpen our edges."

Hope, the MIAA champions, hit .370 during the first set and .364 during the second set.

The Flying Dutch's balanced attack for the match featured nine kills from Fox and eight apiece from senior outside hitter Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and senior right-side hitter Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason).

Junior setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) finished with 28 assists.

Head coach Becky Schmidt was proud of her team's focus and efficiency against Greenville, which ended with a 21-10 record.

"From my standpoint, we did a lot of things tonight in order to find ourselves in a good rhythm as well as execute with discipline," Schmidt said. "I thought there were a lot of times we could have let ourselves get a little sloppy and what we saw our student-athletes do was stay disciplined, stay balanced and do the little things in order to prepare them to be able to dial in their technique and play at a high level."

The Flying Dutch head into the regional semifinals facing a familiar opponent: the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Hope outlasted Stevens-Point in the 2023 regional semifinals at DeVos Fieldhouse, winning the first of four consecutive five-set matches that propelled the Flying Dutch into a national runner-up finish.

Fifth-seeded Stevens Point (20-11) defeated Otterbein University (Ohio) in five sets on Friday afternoon in a first-round match.

Second-seeded Millikin University (Illinois) and sixth-seeded Dubuque University (Iowa) also advanced on Thursday, setting up a showdown on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Hope that will air on ncaa.com.

Semifinal winners will meet on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. in the regional final.
