Wind, rain and more wind. That was Mother Nature's recipe for the MIAA Tournament semifinals environment on Tuesday night.Â
The rain, sometimes coming in sideways, continuously challenged the athletes on the field of Van Andel Soccer Stadium, matching the energy of the game between two rivals.Â
The Hope College men's soccer team battled to the final minute, but ultimately fell to Calvin University, 2-1.Â
The 16th-ranked Flying Dutchmen are now 13-2-3 after recording only their second loss of the season.Â
"I think it comes down to executing the chances that we have, in tournament games, tough games, and they executed one more time than we did," said head coach David Blahnik.Â
Hope now must wait to see if the Flying Dutchmen receive one of 22 Pool C bids to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The 64-team field will be announced on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m.
Against Calvin, the Flying Dutchmen yielded a goal late into the second half that put the Knights ahead, despite even play the entire game.Â
Alex White's goal gave Calvin the go ahead at the 24-minute mark in the first half. White slyly sent a penalty kick past senior goalkeeper Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community HS) into the bottom-left corner of the net.Â
Five minutes later, Hope found itself with a penalty kick of its own.Â
Junior Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) evened the score in the same fashion as the Knights, with a PK sneaking past to empty net in the bottom-left corner.Â
Back at square one for the rivals, and into the second half, the wind howled almost as much as the 598 faithful in the stands.Â
Calvin's Colin Nieuwenhuis broke the tie, something that could not be done during the 1-1 regular-season tie between the two teams, with another sneaky ball that slipped just past Hesselbein's outstretched hands.Â
Calvin doubled Hope in shots, 16-9, with Hesselbein making six saves on the night.Â
