The Hope College men's basketball team tried to muster up some holiday magic but fell to DePauw University (Indiana), 75-71, in overtime on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse.
The inaugural Glenn Van Wieren Classic saw all four teams split their games. In Saturday's opener, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rebounded from Friday's loss to the Flying Dutchmen to defeat The University of Olivet, 74-65.
The Glenn Van Wieren Classic honors Hope's legendary coach, who led the Flying Dutchmen to a 660-219 overall record (.751) over 33 seasons before retiring in 2010. During Van Wieren's tenure, Hope finished as national runner-up twice, advanced to the Final Four three times, made 21 trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament and claimed 17 MIAA titles.

Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central), reached a career milestone after finishing with a game-high 26 points. The senior became the 45th member of the Flying Dutchmen to reach 1,000 career points.
Quillan, an all-tournament selection, also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots.
The Flying Dutchmen (5-6 overall) forced overtime against DePauw when junior guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams HS) sank two free throws with eight-tenths of a second remaining in regulation.
DePauw (5-7) scored the first five points in the five-minute overtime period and never trailed.
Hope pulled within two points at 73-71 when Quilland buried a 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining. The Flying Dutchmen delivered a defensive stop on DePauw's next possession but turned the ball over moments later.
Over the final 15 seconds, Hope missed three score-tying 3-point attempts.
Junior guard Marcus Wourman (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) chipped in 11 points and five assists en route to all-tournament honors. Mims scored 10 points.
DePauw received 18 points, four rebounds and three assists from Classic MVP Caleb Washington.
Washington led four Tigers in double figures. All-tournament honoree Kyle Lillwitz netted 17 points.
Rose-Hulman Joey Schmitz and Olivet's Nathan Richardson also made the all-tournament team.
Hope is now idle until the MIAA opener on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m. vs. Olivet at DeVos Fieldhouse.
