Baseball Topped by Ripon in Season Opener

Designated hitter Logan McCoy smacked a game-high three hits for the Hope College baseball team during a 7-4 season-opening loss to Ripon College (Wis.) on Saturday at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.

The Flying Dutchmen brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Ripon reliever Orion Reiden struck out first baseman Owen Krizan to strand runners at first and third and end the game.

McCoy, a junior from Midland, Michigan (H.H. Dow) went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.

Senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) went 2-for-4 with a team-best two RBIs and one run scored. He doubled and singled.

Senior right fielder Zach Lorentsen (Wheaton, Illinois / Wheaton North) also collected two hits.

Hope outhit Ripon, which finished second in the Midwest Conference preseason coaches poll, by a 10-6 margin.

Ripon jumped to a 3-0 lead with a three-run third and extended the lead to 6-1 with a three-run eighth. Leftfielder Nick Tenny cracked a two-run homer for Ripon.

Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) drove in freshman shortstop Elliott Peter (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville) with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Ripon answered with an Alex Pankratz sacrifice fly in the ninth. In the bottom of the inning, Hope rallied by taking advantage of two hit batters.

Stuursma knocked in junior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) and senior catcher Andrew Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) with a two-out, two-run double.

Rieden entered and promptly hit McCoy. The lefthander retired the next batter he faced.

Losing pitcher Graham O'Gorman (Champaign, Illinois / Champaign Central) scattered six strikeouts and three runs allowed in three innings of work.

Hope returns to action on Friday-Saturday, March 1-2, with a three-game series at Franklin University (Ind.).
