Baseball Drops Series at Franklin

Sophomores Jace DeMann and Cade Seabaugh hit their first home runs of the season for the Hope College baseball team during a weekend series loss at Franklin College (Ind.).

On Saturday, the Flying Dutchmen lost 6-4 and 8-7 during a doubleheader. On Friday, Franklin won the series opener, 11-0, in seven innings. Hope fell to 0-4 on the season.

DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian HS) and Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton) slugged solo blasts during the first three at-bats of the sixth inning in Game 2 to spark Hope.

Trailing 7-3 heading into the eighth inning and 8-3 after, the Flying Dutchmen tacked on more three runs in the seventh on an RBI single from sophomore Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) and an RBI double from Seabaugh. Collins later scored on a wild pitch.

In its last at-bat, Hope put runners on first and second with nobody out after senior Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) singled and Seabaugh walked. After a fielder's choice and a strikeout, junior Dylan Kleinedler (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Stevenson) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Krizan.

Franklin reliever Sam Peck, however, stranded Seabaugh at third by retiring senior Andrew Pickett on a foul out to the catcher.

Seabaugh, DeMann and senior centerfield Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) led Hope's eight-hit attack with two hits apiece.

In Saturday's opener, the Flying Dutchmen threatened with another ninth-inning rally.

Pickett scored the first two of two runs after Krizan was hit by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded. Freshman Elliott Peter (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville) followed with an RBI single.

Franklin reliever Luke Harmon struck out Seabaugh looking for the final out.

Peter and Seabaugh accounted for four of Hope's seven hits with two apiece.

On Friday, the Flying Dutchmen walked nine batters and were outhit by a 7-3 margin.

Hope's next game is Friday, March 8, at 2:30 p.m. against the University of Mount Union (Ohio) in Auburndale, Fla. It is the first of eight games for the Flying Dutchmen on their annual spring break trip.
