Baseball Edged by Greenville

The Hope College baseball team rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning but fell to Greenville University, 6-4, on Monday in Auburndale, Florida.

Senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma led off the game for the Flying Dutchmen with his first home run of the season.

Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids HS) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Hope outhit Greenville, 12-8.

Sophomore leftfielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) recorded a team-high three hits for the Flying Dutchmen (1-7).

Senior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian), sophomore designated hitter Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton) and junior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) each recorded two hits.

Greenville (4-7) took the lead with a two-run third and added runs in the fourth and the sixth.

Rightfielder Rhett Pennington extended the lead to 6-1 on a two-run single in the seventh.

In the ninth, Meeuwsen delivered a two-out, two-run single that scored Money and Collins.

Greenville reliever Jacob Hammer entered the game, but senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) smacked an RBI single that plated Stuursma.

Hammer then earned a save by retiring Seabaugh on a flyout and stranding runners at first and third.

Hope returns to action on Tuesday, March 12, with a 9:15 a.m. doubleheader against Simpson College (Iowa) in Auburndale.
