Baseball Rides Out the Storm, Sweeps Doubleheader from Simpson

The Hope College baseball team rallied late twice to quell the Storm of Simpson College (Iowa) and sweep a doubleheader, 6-5 in seven innings and 13-0 in extra innings, on Tuesday in Auburndale, Florida.

The Flying Dutchmen scored twice in both of the final two innings in Game 1 against a six-win Simpson team and three times in the seventh and eighth innings in Game 2. Hope improved to 3-7 on the season.

"I feel really good about our club. We just haven't been getting a big hit or stringing anything together this season. We've played very good teams this year," head coach Stu Fritz said. "We found a way late in both games and had some great performances at the plate and on the mound."

In Game 1, Hope trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Senior catcher Andrew Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit Prep HS) drove in junior third baseman Al Money with a sacrifice fly for the inning's first run. Senior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) followed with an RBI double that sent home sophomore leftfielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic).

Hope reliever Ian Sanders (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) retired Simpson in order on groundouts in the seventh. It was the sophomore's first of two wins on the day.

Four of the first five Hope batters reached base without a hit thanks to two walks and two hit batters. Collins scored the tying run on Pickett's bases-loaded, one-out walk. With senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma at the plate, Money raced home on a wild pitch with the winning run.

In Game 2, Hope trailed 9-7 heading into its final at-bat. Money cashed in with a tying two-run single that knocked in pinch-runner Dylan Kleinedler (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Stevenson) and freshman designated hitter Elliott Peter (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville).

The Flying Dutchmen went ahead 10-9 on an RBI single from senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) that scored Money.

Simpson forced extra innings by capitalizing on an unearned run with two outs.

In the top of the eighth, Collins evened the score by smacking a one-out RBI single to bring home senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven).

Simpson misplaying Gardner's grounder to first base resulted in a two-run error that plated both Peter and Collins.

Sanders, who pitched three innings in relief, retired all three Simpson batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth.

Hope's next game is on Wednesday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. against Illinois Tech in Davenport, Florida.
