Catcher Andrew Pickett Sparks Baseball Past Illinois Tech in Florida

Andrew Pickett picked up the Hope College baseball team in a big way on Wednesday.

The senior slugged his first home run of the season, collected three RBIs and scored two runs during the Flying Dutchmen's 11-4 victory against Illinois Tech on Wednesday in Davenport, Florida.

Hope (4-7) takes a three-game winning streak into the final game of its spring break trip. The Flying Dutchmen face the University of Southern Maine on Thursday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. in Davenport.

Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit Prep HS) snapped a 1-1 tie by blasting a two-run homer in the bottom of the second that also brought home sophomore rightfielder Charlie Saul (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia).

The catcher's third career homer came two batters after senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) answered Illinois Tech's second-inning run with a sacrifice fly that knocked in senior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian).

Pickett started a three-run fourth inning that pushed the Flying Dutchmen ahead, 7-2, by smacking an RBI single that scored Gardner. Freshman designated hitter Elliott Peter (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville) followed with a two-run double and later scored on a passed ball.

In the eighth, Pickett began a four-run rally by drawing a leadoff walk and scoring after stealing hard and coming home on a throwing error.

The Flying Dutchmen drew 11 walks and recorded eight hits for the game.

Winning pitcher Trent Johnson (Midland, Michigan / Midland) scattered eight hits and three runs over seven innings of work.

Johnson (1-1) struck out nine and walked two against Illinois Tech (2-7).
