Baseball Overpowers Southern Maine, Returns North on Four-Game Winning Streak

The Hope College baseball team is developing a knack for making the most of its last at-bat.

The Flying Dutchmen defeated the University of Southern Maine, 11-2, on Thursday in Davenport, Florida, for their fourth consecutive victory.

Hope erupted for seven runs in the top of the ninth inning. The rally marked the fifth consecutive game the Flying Dutchmen produced multiple rims during their last at-bat.

Coincidentally, Hope has won four of those games and returns north with a 5-7 overall record. The Flying Dutchmen also have reached double figures in runs in three consecutive games.

On Thursday, Hope held a 4-2 lead when the Flying Dutchmen sent 12 batters to the plate during the ninth.

The rally featured a two-run single from junior third baseman Dylan Kleinedler (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Stevenson HS), a two-run triple from senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) and a two-run single from sophomore designated hitter Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic).

The Flying Dutchmen finished with 16 hits to Southern Maine's seven.

Stuursma went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and two runs scored.

Six different Flying Dutchmen added two hits apiece, including Kleinedler.

Senior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the second. It was Meeuwsen's first home run of the season.

Senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven), senior leftfielder Zach Lorentsen (Wheaton, Illinois / Wheaton North), junior second baseman Logan McCoy (Midland, Michigan / Dow) and sophomore rightfielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) all had two hits.

Lorentsen and McCoy each doubled.

Winning pitcher Mason Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) scattered seven hits over 7.2 innings of work against Southern Maine (1-8).

Belmore (2-1) struck out nine while not walking a batter. The right-hander gave up a two-run homer to Southern Maine's Jack LaBlond in the fourth.

Hope returns to action on Friday-Saturday, March 22-23, with a three-game series at Millikin University (Ill.).
