Women's Track and Field Takes First in Three Events on Day 1 of Emory Classic

Runners Rebecca Markham, Sara Schermerhorn and Maddy Struck helped the Hope College women's track and field team start the Emory University Spring Break Classic off on the right foot.

All three won outdoor events on Friday during the opening day at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.


The Flying Dutch sit in first place out of 18 teams with 57.5 points, 12 points ahead of NCAA Division II West Georgia University.


In the 200-meter dash, Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West HS) topped a 67-runner field by recording a run of 24.75 seconds. Heading into the weekend, the time would rank No. 1 in NCAA Division III.


In the 5,000 meters, Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) recorded a winning run of 17 minutes, 39.76 seconds in the 31-runner field. Heading into the weekend, the time would rank fifth in NCAA Division III.


In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Struck (Hainesville, Illinois / Grayslake Central) clocked a career-best and first-place run of 11:11.03. Heading into the weekend, the time would rank second fastest in the nation.


After Struck, freshman Annika Sytsma (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian) placed fourth at 12:15.15. Senior Katie Cole (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia) took fifth at 12:31.33.


Hope earned points in four more events on Friday.


In the shot put, junior Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) finished third out of 33 entrants after posting a toss of 12.77 meters (41 feet, 10.75 inches). Sophomore Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) took seventh at 11.98 meters (39-3.75).

In the 1,500-meter invitational, senior Olivia Quillan (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) delivered a third-place time of 4:42.62. The event featured the meet's fastest 26 entrants for the 1,500.

In the high jump, sophomore Natalie Christnagel (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) tied for fourth after clearing 1.50 meters (4-11).

In the women's hammer, sophomore Sophia Raymond (Woodstock, Illinois / Woodstock) took eighth with a toss of 40.48 meters (132-10).

The two-day meet concludes on Saturday, March 16. Track events start at 9:30 a.m.; field events at 10 a.m.
