Men's Tennis Concludes Florida Trip with Four Wins in Six Matches

The Hope College men's tennis team wrapped up spring break with an 8-1 victory vs. Crown College (Minn.) and a 6-3 loss to Trinity College (Conn.) on Friday in Orlando, Florida.

The Flying Dutchmen won four of six matches down south to raise their overall record to 6-7.

Hope returns home and will open MIAA play on Saturday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at Albion College.

Against Crown, the Flying Dutchmen begin the match by sweeping all three doubles flights.

The No. 1 doubles pair of senior Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis HS) and junior Austin Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) teamed for an 8-4 victory.

The No. 2 doubles team senior John Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) and freshman Rylan Doden (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Blackhawk Christian) and the No. 3 doubles team of Paul Schneider (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) and Cooper Nugent (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) both claimed 8-0 victories.

In singles play, Becksvoort recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the top flight.

At No. 2 singles, junior Jonathan Eggleston (Yuseong Gu, Daejeon / Taejon Christian International School) lost a three-set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).

At No. 3 singles, junior Brendan Evert (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Sterling Heights) posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

The Flying Dutchmen took the final three singles matches without dropping a point: junior Charlie Schmude (Traverse City, Michigan / St. Francis) at No. 4, sophomore Hunter Napieralski (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) at No. 5, and sophomore Ben Schmude (Traverse City, Michigan / St. Francis) at No. 6. 

Against Trinity, Hope won two doubles matches. Fay and Voss took the No. 1 flight, 8-4. Schneider and Nugent earned an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 flight.

Roden and Eggelston dropped the No. 2 flight, 8-3.

In singles play, Schneider earned the Flying Dutchmen a point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 flight.

Nugent went three to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles before losing 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6).

Fay lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Doden fell 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Voss dropped a 6-3, 6-4, match at No. 5. Eggleston lost 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
