Men's Tennis Sweeps Albion in MIAA Opener

The Hope College men's tennis team secured its first clean sweep of the season with a 9-0 victory at Albion College in the MIAA opener on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen evened their record at 7-7 overall after winning for the fourth time in five games.

Hope started the match with a commanding doubles display.

Senior Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis HS) and junior Austin Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) brought in an 8-3 victory at the top doubles flight.

At No. 2 doubles, senior John Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) and freshman Rylan Doden (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Blackhawk Christian) won 8-3.

At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Paul Schneider (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) and Cooper Nugent (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) took an 8-1 victory.

Hope kept the momentum in singles play, winning each flight in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Fay quickly wrapped up the top flight with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Schneider battled back from down a set to claim a 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 comeback win at second singles.

Doden dominated at the third singles line, making quick work of his Brit opponent in a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Nugent brought home a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the fourth flight.

Becksvoort rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win at fifth singles.

Junior Brendan Evert (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Sterling Heights) won a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the sixth flight.

Hope's next match is Tuesday, March 26, at 4 p.m. at Trine University.
