Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Mackenzie McMahon

Men's Lacrosse Falls in Overtime at Lake Forest

For the second time in four days, the Hope College men's lacrosse team saw its game decided by a 9-8 score in overtime.

This time, though, the Flying Dutchmen were on the opposite end of the result.

Macklin Thomas found the back of the net 1 1/2 minutes into overtime to lift unbeaten Lake Forest College (Ill.) to a 9-8 victory on Saturday near Chicago. The Flying Dutchmen moved 2-2 on the season.

On Wednesday, Hope edged Oberlin College (Ohio) with a 9-8 overtime victory at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

On Saturday, a flurry of back-and-forth goals from both teams saw the Foresters and the Flying Dutchmen deadlocked after both the first and second quarters.

Lake Forest (3-0) scored four consecutive times midway through the second half to pull ahead 8-4 with 6:20 remaining.

Twenty-four seconds lates, junior Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern HS) started Hope's run of four consecutive goals. In just 1 1/2 minutes, the Flying Dutchmen cut their deficit to 8-7 behind goals from freshman Gibson Heethuis (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) and senior Michael Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / University of Detroit-Jesuit).

Hope pulled even at 8-8 when senior Blaine Hynde (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer) notching the game-tying goal with 2:01 remaining.

The Flying Dutchmen had two more possessions — one at the end of regulation and one to start the four-minute, sudden-death overtime — but committed a turnover each time.

Thomas buried the game-winner, his fifth goal of the game, 1:34 into the overtime.

Bowen and Mann shared team-high honors with two goals.

Junior Caden Brainard (Plymouth, Michigan / Plymouth) helped Hope in faceoffs against the Foresters, winning at 66.7% clip (14-of-21).

Sophomore goalie Jack Balmforth (Livonia, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) made 14 saves.

Balmforth and Heethuis each picked up a game-high five ground balls.

The Flying Dutchmen are back in action again on Wednesday, March 6, at Aurora University at 7 p.m. Central.
