Women's Lacrosse Falls at John Carroll

Sophomore Julia Brown scored a season-high five goals to lead the Hope College women's lacrosse team during a 25-16 loss at John Carroll University on Friday in Cleveland, Ohio.

It was the first matchup between the two teams. John Carroll finished third in the Ohio Athletic Conference preseason poll but received one first-place vote.

Hope, the preseason favorite in the MIAA, dropped to 0-2 on the season.

John Carroll (1-2) broke open a close game by scoring 10 of the third quarter's 14 goals after leading 12-9 at halftime. Attacker Anna Spitzer and midfielder Riley Knapp netted three goals apiece during the third quarter.

Spitzer finished with a game-high six goals. Knapp joined teammate Kendall Gessner with five goals.

John Carroll put 34 of its 38 shots on goal.

Goalies Maddie Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford HS) and Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana / Westfield) made 13 and 12 saves, respectively, for the Flying Dutch.

Hope received three goals and one assist from senior attacker Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Hartland).

Three Flying Dutch each scored twice: junior attacker Kerrigan Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt), sophomore midfielder Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek) and junior attacker Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn).

Kirkpatrick also recorded a team-best three assists.

Hope finished with 22 shots, including a team-high eight from Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) while committing 20 turnovers to John Carroll's 14.

The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, March 9, at 11 a.m. against Oberlin College (Ohio) at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
