Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Alan Babbitt

Men's Lacrosse Falls at Home to Colorado College

The Hope College men's lacrosse team could not overcome a rare slow start at home and dropped an in-region matchup to Colorado College, 9-7, on Thursday.

The Flying Dutchmen trailed 5-1 after the first quarter and never pulled back closer than two goals.

Entering the game, Hope had outscored six opponents in the first quarter by a combined 24-10 margin.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Flying Dutchmen, who slipped to 4-3 on the season.

Colorado improved to 5-3 overall. The Tigers received goals from eight players, including two from attacker Matt Hudson.

Goalie Ben Anastos made 17 saves in the victory.

Hudson's man-up goal 3 minutes, 10 seconds into the game opened the scoring.

Colorado stretched the lead to 4-0 over the next eight minutes before freshman attacker Gibson Heethuis (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville HS) put Hope on the board with 1 ½ minutes remaining in the quarter.

Braydon Ellis capped the first-quarter scoring for Colorado with 10 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The Flying Dutchmen pulled within 6-4 at halftime on second-quarter goals from sophomore long-stick midfielder Liam Belote (Saline, Michigan / Saline), senior midfielder Blaine Hynde (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer) and junior long-stick midfielder Luke Wierengo (Northville, Michigan / Northville), but Colorado's defense stiffened during the third quarter.

The Tigers produced the third quarter's only two goals — both coming with less than four minutes remaining in the period.

The Flying Dutchmen outshot Colorado, 45-36. The Tigers committed 18 turnovers to Hope's 20.

Heethuis topped the Flying Dutchmen with two goals. Sophomore defender John Foster (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) had two of Hope's three assists.

The Flying Dutchmen aim to bounce back on Saturday, March 23, at noon Central at Carthage College (Wis.).
