Baseball Zaps Thunder Twice, Opens MIAA Play with Sweep at Trine

Two clutch rallies propelled the Hope College baseball team to an 8-1 and 6-5 sweep at Trine University on Friday in the MIAA opener for both teams.

In Game 1, the Flying Dutchmen sent all nine batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and grabbed a 4-0 lead.

In Game 2, eight batters produced a go-ahead, two-run rally during Hope's final at-bat in the bottom of the eighth.

The Flying Dutchmen (8-10 overall) will go for the series sweep on Monday, April 1, at a time to be determined at Boeve Stadium. It is scheduled to be a single, nine-inning game.

Game 1 starting pitcher Trent Johnson benefited from Hope's initial strike against the Thunder (8-11).

The junior from Midland, Michigan (H.H. Dow HS) fired a 103-pitch complete game to even his record at 2-2.

Johnson allowed only five hits and a sixth-inning Cole Temple sacrifice fly over nine innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked two.

In the first inning, Hope jumped ahead by four runs after receiving run-scoring singles from sophomore designated hitter Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton), sophomore leftfielder Brenden Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) and sophomore rightfielder Charlie Saul (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia), and an RBI groundout from senior second baseman Nolan Gardner.

Senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) smacked a sixth-inning RBI double for the Flying Dutchmen.

Senior catcher Andrew Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) delivered an RBI single in the eighth.

Hope added two more runs in the ninth on an RBI double from Collins and a run-scoring single from sophomore right-fielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian).

In Game 2, the Flying Dutchmen overcame a 4-1 deficit after three innings.

Hope evened the score at 4-4 with a three-run sixth. Senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) delivered a game-tying, two-run single after hitting a run-scoring single in the first.

Trine went ahead 5-4 in the top of the eight on Max Hoogeveen's out-out RBI single. Reliever and winning pitcher Matt Plaehn (Okemos, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) thwarted further damage by inducting an inning-ending double-play ground out.

The Flying Dutchmen tied the score when junior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) scored from third after Trine misplayed a grounder to third with one out.

Two batters later, junior designated hitter Logan McCoy (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) drew a bases-loaded walk to put Hope ahead 6-5.

Sophomore reliever Ian Sanders Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) retired the Thunder in order in the ninth for his second save. It was Plaehn's first decision of the season.
