Senior Graham O'Gorman Pitches Baseball to Series Sweep of Trine

Graham O'Gorman wasn't fooling around on April 1st on the mound.

The junior fired seven shutout innings for the Hope College baseball team during a 10-0 victory against Trine University in Monday's home opener at Boeve Stadium. The game ended early on the 10-run rule.

O'Gorman (Champaign, Illinois / Champaign Central HS) flashed the pitching form that made him a seven-game winner last season.

O'Gorman recorded his longest and best outing this season while tossing a complete-game shutout. The right-hander struck out five while allowing five hits and one walk.

The victory secured a three-game series sweep for the Flying Dutchmen (9-10, 3-0 MIAA).

"Super excited for him and super excited for us," head coach Stu Fritz said. "He probably didn't have his good stuff to start the season. I think he found it at Millikin [in his last start] and today he was lights out. Confident, the ball came out of his hands so much better. I hope he's back and ready to roll."

O'Gorman raised his record to 1-3 while lowering his ERA by three runs to 6.05.

In 87 pitches, O'Gorman allowed five singles and faced 24 Trine batters — three over the minimum.

O'Gorman followed up a quality start during a 5-4 loss at Millikin University (Ill.) on March 23 where he did not earn a decision. During five innings of work, O'Gorman gave up three hits and two runs to Millikin.

The Flying Dutchmen helped O'Gorman against Trine (8-12, 0-3 MIAA) by erasing two baserunners on double plays and throwing out another caught stealing.

Offensively, Hope gave O'Gorman all the offense he would need on a two-run single from freshman designated hitter Elliott Peter (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville) during the bottom of the second inning.

The Flying Dutchmen collected 12 hits for the game.

Senior Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The second baseman stretched Hope's lead to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly in the third and a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Junior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI on a single during a four-run seventh that ended the game with nobody out.

Money later scored on a three-run double from senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids), Michigan / East Grand Rapids). Stuursma and Peter shared team-high honors with three RBIs.

"We found a way and picked each other up [at the plate]," Fritz said.

Hope is scheduled to start a series at Kalamazoo College on Tuesday, April 2, at 4 p.m., weather permitting.
