Baseball Drops Spring Break Opener to Mount Union

Junior Trent Johnson scattered seven hits and two runs over six innings on the mound for the Hope College baseball team during a 6-0 loss to the University of Mount Union (Ohio) on Friday in Davenport, Florida.

Johnson
(Midland, Michigan / Midland HS) struck out two and did not walk a batter for the Flying Dutchmen during their spring break opener.

The right-hander kept Mount Union (7-3) scoreless until the sixth inning.

Mount Union hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Shortstop Chris Viamonte then scored the game's first run when the Flying Dutchmen third baseman Al Money misplayed a grounder by centerfielder Zach Mazza.

Johnson induced first baseman Jaired Lehman into grounding into a double play, but second baseman Andrew Witte scored on the play for a 2-0 Mount Union lead.

Mount Union doubled up Hope with eight hits to the Flying Dutchmen's four.

Starting pitcher Brady Hansen struck out 11 and allowed only four hits during 8.1 innings of work. Hansen, who improved to 3-0, did hit three batters and walked one.

Hope received a double from senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids).

The Flying Dutchmen also recorded singles from senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids), sophomore designated hitter Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri  / Ladue Horton) and freshman rightfielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian).

Hope returns to action on Saturday, March 9, with games in Davenport, Fla., at 9:45 a.m. against Anderson University (Ind.) and 1 p.m. against Benedictine University (Ill.).
