Mason Belmore Pitches Baseball to Season's First Victory

Mason Belmore took matters into his own hands to put the Hope College baseball team in the win column.

The junior fired a complete game on the mound to lead the Flying Dutchmen to a 6-3 win against six-win Anderson University (Ind.) on Saturday morning in Davenport, Florida.

Hope (1-6) then lost to unbeaten Benedictine University (Ill.), 6-2, on Saturday afternoon.

Against Anderson, Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview HS) tossed his third career complete game and first this season.

The right-handed Belmore allowed nine hits and three earned runs over nine innings of work. Belmore (1-1) struck out five, walked one and hit one batter.

The Flying Dutchmen gave Belmore the lead for good against Anderson (7-5) with a three-run bottom of the third.

Senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) and junior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) led off with singles. One batter later, Gardner scored on a wild pitch to even the score at 1-1.

After two hit batters loaded the bases, junior designated hitter Logan McCoy (Midland, Michigan / Dow) drew a two-out, RBI walk from Anderson starter Logan Nickel to bring in Money.

Sophomore rightfielder Jace DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) then was plunked to knock in senior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian).

DeMann then added RBI singles in the fifth and seventh to score senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) twice.

Senior catcher Andrew Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) had an RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Against Benedictine, Hope evened the score at 1-1 when senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles took the lead back in the second on a Chase Hanselman RBI double.

Benedictine (7-0) broke open the game with a three-run fourth off of Hope starter Graham O'Gorman (Champaign, Illinois / Champaign Central) to grab a 5-1 lead.

O'Gorman (0-3) yielded eight hits and six runs in four innings.

Gardner had an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.

Four Hope relievers combined to fire five innings of scoreless relief: freshman Thomas Bacigalupo (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow), junior Branden Rosenfeld (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel), sophomore Ian Sanders (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) and senior Jake Van Dam (Cranford, N.J. / Cranford).

Hope returns to action on Monday, March 11, at 9:45 a.m. with a single, nine-inning game against Greenville College (Ill.) in Auburndale, Florida.
