Women's Tennis Enjoys First Home Spring Match Outdoors, Tops Saint Mary's

The Flying Dutch set up a first-place showdown at Calvin University this weekend

The 29th-ranked Hope College women's tennis team played on the fantastic Vande Poel-Heeringa Stadium Courts for the first time this spring on Wednesday and defeated St. Mary's College 8-1 amid the equally fantastic early April weather.

With the victory, the Orange and Blue improved to 14-5 on the season and are 5-0 in MIAA play. Hope also set up a showdown at Calvin University (14-1, 4-0 MIAA), on Saturday, April 13, at 3 p.m.

The Flying Dutch's doubles teams served up another winning start by sweeping all three doubles matches against Saint Mary's (12-6, 2-2 MIAA).

Third doubles, spearheaded by the freshman tandem of Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit HS) and Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) brought in the first point of the day, winning 8-0.

Senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) rolled for a 8-2 victory at second doubles.

Hope's top duo of junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) and sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) finished off with an 8-3 win at first doubles.

The pair is now 19-4 on the season and unbeaten in conference matches.

Lopykinski pointed to the connectivity the pair has on the court when asked about their success,

"It's all about the mental side," Lopykinski said. "She covers for me whenever I'm down… I cover for her; it's all about the energy."

Lopykinski also topped Hope's singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 flight that raised her record to 14-7 record.

Lopykinski saved three consecutive break points early in the second set to blow the match open, and finished the game with 27% of her serves  (12/44) going unreturned.

"The mentality was to trust my shots," Lopykinski said. "I've trained hard enough with this team. I know they want me to push myself, so why not give it my all?"

Hope won four of the remaining five singles flights.

Moran delivered a 6-2, 6-4 victory at second singles.

Weeber fought hard but fell 6-4, 6-4 at third singles

With Coffey, normally the fourth singles player, sitting out singles play to rest her shoulder, many players stepped up in a big way.

At fourth singles, Wei moved up two flights and duked out a super tiebreaker to win 7-5, 4-6, (1-0).

At fifth singles, sophomore Hope Rhoades (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

At sixth singles, Walker captured a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
