Women's Tennis Serves Up 17th Consecutive Win vs. Calvin

The indomitable Hope College women's tennis team marched closer to reclaiming the MIAA regular-season championship on Saturday.

The 29th-ranked Flying Dutch went on the road and served a 6-3 conquest of No. 48 Calvin University in their first-place showdown. Both teams entered with unbeaten league records.

Hope improved to 15-5 on the season and 6-0 in conference play with its 17th consecutive victory against the Knights.

The Flying Dutch can claim at least a share of the regular season title with a win at home against Kalamazoo College on Saturday, April 20, at 3 p.m. Calvin (14-2, 4-1) is in second place.

On Saturday, the Orange and Blue seized early command by winning two of three doubles flights.

At third doubles, freshmen Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit HS) and Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) steamrolled their opponents for an 8-0 victory.

Sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) and junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) served an 8-6 victory at first doubles.

Calvin took second doubles as senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) were defeated 8-4.

In singles, the two teams traded victories early.

At sixth singles, sophomore Hope Rhoades (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) fell first at 6-0, 6-2, to even the score at 2-2.

Weeber captured third singles 6-1, 7-5, while Moran secured second singles 6-1, 6-0, catapulting the Flying Dutch back into the lead.

Coffey fell at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-0, keeping the Knights within striking distance. Both the final two matches went to tiebreakers.

Fortunately for Hope, Wei and Lopykinski were dialed in.

Wei finished first, clinching her match at fifth singles with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 comeback victory.
