Baseball Moves Back Atop the MIAA Standings after Sweep of Olivet

The Hope College baseball team hammered its way to the top of the MIAA standings on Saturday with a 12-0 and 16-9 doubleheader sweep at The University of Olivet.

After collecting 33 hits over 17 innings, the Flying Dutchmen raised their league record to 8-2 and moved one-half game ahead of second-place Adrian College and one game ahead of third-place Kalamazoo College.

Adrian and Kalamazoo split a doubleheader against each other at Adrian on Saturday and will play the series finale on Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m. at Adrian.

The Flying Dutchmen (14-12 overall) took the opener from Olivet, 12-0, in seven innings.

Starting pitcher Mason Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview HS) fired a complete-game, 86-pitch shutout. The junior righthander struck out five and gave up five hits to improve his record to 5-1 this season.

Senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) drove in the game's first run with a single and finished 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Junior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland) went 3-for-3 with one run scored and four RBIs, including a third-inning, two-run double and a sixth-inning, two-run single.

Senior centerfielder Robbie Stuursma (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Flying Dutchmen totaled 15 hits while scoring in five of seven innings.

In Game 2, Hope answered after Olivet grabbed an 8-7 lead by capitalizing on two Flying Dutchmen errors for a four-run sixth.

Hope erupted for four runs in the seventh and five in the ninth after taking a 6-0 lead with a six-run third.

Stuursma smacked a go-ahead RBI double in the seventh, then later scored on a wild pitch following Krizan's bases-loaded walk that initially scored senior catcher Andrew Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit Prep).

Senior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian), sophomore rightfielder Charlie Saul (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia) and Stuursma led the Flying Dutchmen's 18-hit attack with three hits apiece.

Senior reliever Matt Plaehn (Okemos, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) picked up the decision with one inning of work in the sixth. Plaehn (2-0) faced six hits and was charged with allowing one unearned run.

Hope and Olivet are scheduled to conclude their three-game series on Monday, April 15, at 3 p.m. at Boeve Stadium.
