Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Alan Babbitt

Men's Lacrosse Stifles Adrian, Yields Four Goals in Victory

For the sixth consecutive game, the Hope College men's lacrosse team held an opponent to 10 or fewer goals.

For the fifth time during the stretch, the defensive effort paid off with a victory.

The Flying Dutchmen won at Adrian College, 14-4, on Saturday behind a stingy defense that allowed the fewest goals in 17 games — a stretch that dates back to a 24-4 victory at Alma College on April 26, 2023.

The victory extended Hope's winning streak to five games and left the Flying Dutchmen 9-3 overall and 3-0 in MIAA play. Hope leads second-place Albion College and Calvin University by one game and holds the tiebreaker edge over both schools for MIAA Tournament seeding.

The Flying Dutchmen have posted a goals-against average of 7.20 over the past six games and own a 5-1 record during that stretch. Only one opponent has reached double digits.

Hope's next game is Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m. against Kalamazoo College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The Flying Dutchmen did not yield a goal to Adrian over the final 35 minutes, 33 seconds, including the entire second half.

Sophomore goalie Jack Balmforth (Livonia, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central HS) anchored the Hope defense by making 11 saves while playing all but the final 1 ½ minutes.

The Flying Dutchmen limited Adrian (5-6, 0-2 MIAA) to only seven shots after halftime. Hope also controlled possession by winning seven of nine second-half faceoffs.

Adrian grabbed a 2-0 lead during the opening 2 ½ minutes, but the Flying Dutchmen struck back five more times before the Bulldogs finally scored again at the 9:11 mark of the second quarter. Hope led 7-4 at halftime.

Offensively, junior midfielder Andrew Lanham (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) led the Flying Dutchmen with four goals, including three man-up ones.

Lanham scored Hope's final four goals, including three during the fourth quarter.

Senior attacker Michael Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / University of Detroit-Jesuit) chipped in three goals and one assist, including the go-ahead goal that resulted in a 3-2 lead with 36 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Mann has 31 goals on the season and 181 in his career. The public accounting and business major is three goals from passing Gunnar Elder, who played from 2014 through 2017, for Hope's career record of 183.

Sophomore midfielder Jackson Early (East Lansing, Michigan/ East Lansing) added two goals.

Junior attacker Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) recorded a season-high four assists and one goal.

Michael Jones topped Adrian with two goals.
