Women's Tennis Sweeps Kalamazoo, Serves Up MIAA Title Share

The 29th-ranked Hope College women's tennis team brought the heat on Saturday and cooked up another MIAA regular-season championship.

The Flying Dutch swept visiting Kalamazoo College, 9-0, at DeWitt Tennis Center to secure at least a share of a 29th league title and the top seed for next month's MIAA Tournament.

Hope, which improved to 16-5 on the season and 7-0 in MIAA play, have the opportunity to clinch an outright championship on Monday, April 22, at 4 p.m. at home against The University of Olivet.

Saturday's victory marked the second time the Flying Dutch avenged last season's regular-season loss to Kalamazoo, which snapped an MIAA-record, dual match conference winning streak at 70 wins and ended Hope's record-setting seven consecutive regular-season titles.

The Flying Dutch first earned a measure of revenge with a 5-3 victory against the Hornets in the 2023 MIAA Tournament championship match.

Lone senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) reveled in Saturday's victory against Kalamazoo, which dropped to 8-9 overall and a fourth-place 4-3 in MIAA matches.

"Last season, we were just short of winning, so to come back and win 9-0 against the same team just feels amazing," Weeber said.

Hope jumped out to a hot start with three doubles victories out of the gate.

At the first flight, junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) and sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) delivered an 8-2 victory.

Weeber and junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) followed up with an 8-4 win at second doubles.

The freshman third doubles duo of Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) and Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) capped the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory.

In singles play, Weeber earned Hope's first singles point with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the third flight.

Moran clinched the match victory at second singles with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Lopykinski fought hard for a 6-4, 7-5 victory at the top flight.

At fourth singles, Coffey got herself out of an early deficit and rallied to win 7-5, 7-5.

Wei saved a tight match, winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 at fifth singles.

Despite being the last match on the court, Walker put on a show at sixth singles by completing a comeback with four match-point saves and earned a 2-6, 7-6 (9), 10-6 victory.

"I was so focused on just getting it in. I used my kick serve a lot, and I think that worked," Walker said.
