Baseball Thumps Kalamazoo, Wins Season Series

Leftfielder Brenden Collins and the Hope College baseball team crushed it.

Collins blasted a three-run homer in his hometown that launched the MIAA-leading Flying Dutchmen to a 14-0, seven-inning victory at second-place Kalamazoo College and a series victory on Tuesday.

The sophomore from Kalamazoo, Michigan (Hackett Catholic HS) sparked a five-run first inning. Hope defeated the defending MIAA regular-season champion Hornets at their Woodsworth Field for the second time in six days.

Kalamazoo could have pulled even in the MIAA standings and earned a tiebreaker advantage for the league tournament with a victory.

Instead, the Flying Dutchmen (16-12, 10-2 MIAA) opened a 1 ½-game lead over second-place Adrian College, which is 8-3 in league play after beating Trine University, 21-4, on Tuesday. Alma College sits in third place with a 7-3 league record. Kalamazoo is fourth with an 8-4 mark.

Hope batted around during its first at-bat against Kalamazoo.

Collins, the game's fifth batter, followed an RBI single from sophomore designated hitter Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton) by blasting a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left-center.

It was the third home run of the season for Collins. He also homered during Monday's 11-0, seven-inning victory against The University of Olivet at Boeve Baseball Stadium.

Two batters later, junior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland) knocked in senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) with a sacrifice bunt.

The run support was enough for starting pitcher Jake Van Dam (Cranford, N.J. / Cranford).

The fifth-year senior fired six scoreless innings to raise his record to 2-1. The right-hander gave up four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Collins scored two more times during the game: in the sixth on a two-run single from senior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and in the seventh on Gardner's three-run single.

Gardner finished 3-for-3 with a game-high four RBIs and three runs scored.

Seabaugh went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.

The Flying Dutchmen racked up 14 hits as senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven), Meeuwsen and Money collected two apiece.

Hope is scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 19, at 4 p.m. at Albion College. The Flying Dutchmen will host a doubleheader to conclude the series on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m. at Boeve Stadium.
