Women's Tennis Claims 11th Outright MIAA Championship in 12 Seasons

With a dominating performance over The University of Olivet, the 29th-ranked Hope College women's tennis team secured a familiar prize: an outright MIAA regular-season championship.

The Flying Dutch completed the climb atop the MIAA standings alone for the 11th time in 12 seasons on Monday by defeating The University of Olivet, 9-0, at VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts.

Hope (17-5, 8-0 MIAA) reclaimed the outright league title after finishing runner-up last season.

Senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) was honored before and after the match on Monday.

Weeber has been a key part of Hope's rotation all four years of her career, and she has earned a 54-23 record in singles play and tied for 19th most singles wins in a career. Weeber is 50-31 in doubles play, tied for 20th most doubles wins in a career.

"It has been such a joy to watch everybody grow throughout the year," Weeber said. "It's so much fun, and I'm going to miss it so much."

Weeber and junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) rolled for an 8-0 victory at first doubles, allowing Weeber to add "undefeated in one doubles" to her resume. The pair usually line up at No. 2 doubles for the Flying Dutch.

At second doubles, freshmen Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) and Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) moved up a flight to scoop up an 8-3 victory.

At third doubles, freshmen Makenna Crandell (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center) and Kamryn Dumas (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) delivered another 8-0 sweep.

In singles play, sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) fired off a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the top flight.

Junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles.

Weeber cooked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory at third singles.

At fourth singles, Coffey won 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore Hope Rhoades (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) won 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles.

Sophomore Noa Bowen (North Muskegon, Michigan / North Muskegon) powered her way to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the sixth singles.

Hope will host its next match on Thursday, May 2, in the MIAA semifinals against Kalamazoo College.
