Men's Tennis Sweeps Olivet, Clinches No. 4 Seed for the MIAA Tournament

With a sharp 9-0 victory over The University of Olivet, the Hope College men's tennis secured a spot in next week's MIAA Tournament.

The Flying Dutchmen (10-10, 4-3 MIAA) will play on Wednesday, May 1, in the semifinals at a top-seeded opponent to be determined this week.

Seniors Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis HS) and John Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) were honored before and after the matches for their contributions on and off the court.

Fay has led the team this year at first doubles, where he has posted an overall record of 11-8 this season. Fay has also played first singles all year and has a 6-12 record.

Fay, who earned points in singles and doubles matches against Olivet, is grateful for his time with the Flying Dutchmen.

"When I was a freshman, all I cared about was myself winning," Fay said. "And over time here it's been so good for me as a person and as a leader on the team to really have genuine joy for when my teammates do a great job."

Voss became a regular on the team as a junior at third doubles, where he played with Fay. This year, he moved up to second doubles.

Voss, who also played primarily sixth singles, earned a singles point against Olivet. He, too, is thankful for his team on the men's tennis team at Hope.

"My favorite moment is almost every day, getting done with classes, being able to hop on the tennis court with a fantastic group of guys, all classy dudes," Voss said. "We always have a great time playing and enjoying it all."

Hope posted five sweeps in nine matches against the Comets (3-14, 0-7 MIAA).

Fay and junior Austin Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) led the way at first doubles with an 8-1 victory.

At second doubles, freshman Cooper Nugent (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) and junior Jonathan Eggleston (Yuseong Gu, Daejeon / Taejon Christian International School) swept their opponents, 8-0.

At third doubles, sophomores Hunter Napieralski (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) and Ben Schmude (Traverse City, Michigan / St. Francis) stepped into the lineup and served up an 8-0 victory.

In singles play, Hope displayed its depth with some new faces seeing the court.

Voss played a strong match for a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fourth singles.

At fifth and sixth singles, junior Brendan Evert (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Sterling Heights) and junior Charlie Schmude (Traverse City, Michigan / St. Francis) each won 6-0, 6-0.

Doden rolled at third singles for a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Schneider cooked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory at second singles.

Fay finished things off at first singles with a hard-fought 6-1, 6-4 victory.
