Women's Tennis Delivers 15th Consecutive MIAA Tournament Semifinal Victory

Hope will host third-seeded Saint Mary's College in the title match.

Since the current four-team MIAA postseason format debuted in 2009, you can count on the Hope College women's tennis competing for a tournament championship.

For the 15th consecutive completed season, it's happening again. The Flying Dutch advanced to the title match by serving up a 5-1 semifinal victory against fourth-seeded Kalamazoo College on Thursday at VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts.

Top-seeded and 33rd-ranked Hope (18-5) will host third-seeded Saint Mary's College on Saturday, May 4, in the final at 3 p.m. Saint Mary's won at second-seeded Calvin University, 5-1, in Thursday's other semifinal.

The Flying Dutch will be looking to extend their league-record run of tournament championships to 12 on Saturday.

Hope will be appearing in its 15th consecutive tournament final. The Flying Dutch last finished tournament runner-up in 2011.

The MIAA Tournament champion receives the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championships.

Against Kalamazoo, the MIAA regular-season champs rolled early with three quick doubles wins.

Sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township HS) and junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) took first doubles with an 8-3 victory.

At second doubles, senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) shut out their opponents for an 8-0 victory.

Freshman duo Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) and Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) wrapped the sweep at third doubles, taking their match 8-4.

In singles play, Weeber made quick work of her opponent at third singles, pushing the lead to 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Coffey lost at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-2, but Wei closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at fifth singles.
