Women's Lacrosse Shines Amid the Rain, Knocks off Alma in MIAA Opener

Even on a rainy afternoon, the Hope College women's lacrosse team shined brightly.

The Flying Dutch started fast and cruised to a 17-9 victory against Alma College on Wednesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium in the MIAA opener for both teams.

The defending league champions never trailed in the matchup of the top two teams in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll after jumping ahead 9-2 during the first quarter.

Goalie Maddie Yakes and attacker Julia Brown powered Hope (5-4, 1-0 MIAA) through the steady raindrops.

Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford HS) matched her career-high with 17 saves, including nine during the first half as the Flying Dutch took a 12-4 halftime lead.

The 17 saves set a stadium record for Hope by surpassing the senior's previous best of 15.

Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) snapped a 1-1 tie at the 10-minute, 15-second mark of the first quarter to begin a run of seven consecutive Flying Dutch goals over nearly 5 ½ minutes.

The sophomore led Hope with five goals and now has a team-leading 30 on the season, one more than senior attacker Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Hartland).

Salazar, Hope's career goals leader, scored four times against Alma (3-5, 0-1 MIAA).

The Flying Dutch also received three goals and a game-high four assists from junior attacker Kerrigan Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt).

Junior attacker Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn) totaled two goals and three assists for Hope.

Sophomore midfielder Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek) added two goals, while senior Kristen Szost (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison International Academy) had one.

The victory was Hope's seventh in a row against Alma. Sam Peterson topped the Scots with five goals.

The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m. against Calvin University. Calvin finished third in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, one point behind Alma.
