Women's Lacrosse Knocked Off by No. 13-Ranked Roanoke in NCAA Division III Tournament Opener

A high-powered and efficient opponent thwarted the Hope College women's lacrosse team's bid for a breakthrough victory at the NCAA Division III Tournament.

No. 13-ranked Roanoke College (Va.) scored the opening-round game's first seven goals and marched to a 24-6 victory on Friday at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.

The MIAA regular-season and tournament champion Flying Dutch finished with a 13-5 record that set a school record for single-season victories. It was Hope's second consecutive and all-time postseason appearance.

Roanoke — from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference — advanced to a second-round game against Capital on Saturday, May 11.

"Tough game today. Credit to Roanoke. They played a fantastic game," assistant coach Rich Pruszynski said. "Great team, great athletes. They did a great job out there. I am really proud of our effort and positive attitude throughout. We were grinding from the first to the last whistle."

Roanoke (14-4) won the first draw control and grabbed a 1-0 lead 31 seconds into the game.

The Maroons pushed their lead to 7-0 until sophomore attacker Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central HS) put Hope on the board at the 11:04 mark of the second quarter.

Roanoke erupted for 10 second-quarter goals to take a 14-3 halftime lead.

The Maroons matched their season-high for goals and received goals from 12 different players. Kate Loughran topped Roanoke with four goals.

Hope received goals from six different players, including senior Molly Frederickson (Alto, Michigan / Lowell), senior Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Hartland), senior Kristen Szost (Jenison, Michigan / International Academy), sophomore Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek) and sophomore Caleigh Randall  (Lansing, Michigan / DeWitt).

The game marked the final game for five seniors: Frederickson, Salazar, Szost, Tori Hoffman (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Mattawan) and Maddie Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford).

Salazar is Hope's all-time leading goal scorer and points leader with 196 goals and 236 points.

Yakes is the Flying Dutch's all-time wins leader for a goalkeeper with 37.

As a class, the seniors helped Hope to a 46-21 overall record the last four seasons as well as the team's first two NCAA Division III Tournament appearances and MIAA championships.

"They're going to be missed. There's no doubt about that," Pruszynski said. "They are all very special people and played vital roles in our success. They've given a lot of themselves. There's been a lot of hard work, but a lot of rewards, too."
