Women's Lacrosse Wins 100th Game, Marches Back into MIAA Tournament Final

A milestone victory propelled the Hope College women's lacrosse team to the cusp of another memorable feat.

The Flying Dutch reached the century mark for all-time wins after defeating visiting Albion College, 17-7, in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on Wednesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Top-seeded Hope (12-4) advanced to host Trine University in the championship game on Saturday, May 4, at 4 p.m. The winner receives the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Flying Dutch are seeking back-to-back MIAA Tournament titles after winning their first postseason crown last season.

Head coach Keagan Pontious said reaching the 100-win mark as a program is a satisfying achievement.

"It's a testament to all of the women who came before us and all the support we have from every place on campus that allows us to be good," Pontious said. "It's amazing to have this opportunity and be here with a great group of women."

Hope accomplished the feat by downing Albion (7-9) for the second time in a week.  Women's lacrosse became an intercollegiate sport at Hope in 2013.

All-MIAA Second Team selection and sophomore attacker Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn HS) led the Flying Dutch attack by scoring a season-high five goals, including the game's first goal.

All-MIAA First Team selections Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) and Molly Frederickson chipped in three goals apiece.

Brown, who now has 59 goals on the season, set a new Flying Dutch single-season record after passing teammate Elena Salazar's mark of 57.

Frederickson also netted two assists, while Brown had one.

Sophomore Sydney LaPrairier (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Stoney Creek) added two goals for Hope.

The Flying Dutch broke open the game by ripping off six of the second quarter's seven goals and grabbed a 9-3 halftime lead.

"Albion did a great job adjusting its defense. We weren't ready for it," Pontious said. "Our play calls were better for us in the second quarter to see the openings and where we could score from."

Hope outshot Albion, 43-20, for the game.

All-MIAA First Team goalkeeper Maddie Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) made five saves for the Flying Dutch.
