Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Calvin in Regular-Season Finale

The Hope College baseball team closed the regular season with a 15-5 victory and a 4-0 loss to Calvin University on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen (20-18 overall, 13-8 MIAA) will be the No. 3 or No. 4 seed for next week's MIAA Tournament depending on the result of the Kalamazoo College at Alma College doubleheader on Saturday, May 4.

If Kalamazoo sweeps Alma, Hope will tie Alma for third place and win the tiebreaker for the third seed. One Alma victory gives the Scots the third seed.

The Flying Dutchmen's doubleheader against Calvin was moved to artificial turf at Davenport University after rain Friday evening and Saturday morning left Calvin's field unplayable.

In the first game, Hope capitalized on the Knights' pitching hitting nine batters and walking five.

The Flying Dutchmen outhit Calvin 14-10 and never looked back after grabbing a 6-3 lead with a five-run third.

Sophomore designated hitter Cade Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / Ladue Horton HS) and senior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) started the rally with two-run singles. Junior third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland) knocked in another run with an infield single.

In the fourth, senior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Haven) began a three-run rally by smacking a two-run triple. Krizen went 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

Leadoff batter Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) scored a game-high four times for the Flying Dutchmen.

Winning pitcher Trent Johnson (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) scattered three runs and seven hits over six innings. Johnson (6-4) struck out four and walked three.

Four Calvin pitchers, including starter Evan Steinbacher, combined to throw a seven-hit shutout in Game 2. Caden Penn's two-run single in the third proved to be the game-winning hit.

Losing pitcher Mason Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) allowed five hits and three runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings of work.

The Knights (18-21, 9-12 MIAA) took the series after winning Friday's opener, 8-4, at Hope.
