Baseball Teammates Named MIAA's Valuable Players; Three Earn All-MIAA Accolades

Hope College teammates Trent Johnson and Robbie Stuursma teamed up for a special accomplishment on the baseball diamond this season.

The junior pitcher and senior centerfielder became the third set of Flying Dutchmen teammates to sweep MIAA Most Valuable Player accolades.

Johnson (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow HS) is the Pitcher of the Year, while Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) is the Position Player of the Year.

They joined Sean Hoey and Evan Maday (2022) and Brian Baker and Mike Rodgers (2007) in accomplishing the feat. They co-headline the All-MIAA First Team.

Sophomore designated hitter Cade Seabaugh claimed All-MIAA Second Team distinction.

Johnson led the MIAA with seven starts and five victories on the mound. The righthander also recorded a league-best three complete games, 2.42 ERA and 48.1 innings.

A business major, Johnson finished MIAA play with 32 strikeouts to 14 walks.

This is Johnson's first All-MIAA award.

Stuursma batted leadoff for the Flying Dutchmen and posted a league-best .583 on-base percentage and a third-best .435 batting average.

The business major topped the MIAA with three triples in league games while finishing second in doubles with 11 and stolen bases with 11.

Stuursma belted two home runs, recorded 17 RBIs and scored 26 runs.

This is Stuursma's second All-MIAA award. Stuursma also was a first-team selection in 2023.

Seabaugh (Ballwin, Missouri / LaDue Horton) batted a team-leading .446 in 14 games while belting four home runs and collecting 20 RBIs.

This is Seabaugh's first All-MIAA honor.
