Men's Soccer Leaves Home Crowd Buzzing with Seven Goals in Victory

For the second consecutive night, the Hope College Flying Dutchmen enthralled a home crowd eager for the return of soccer to Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The Flying Dutchmen struck early and often to defeat LeTourneau University (Texas), 7-0, on Saturday.

Hope exterminated the threat from the Yellowjackets and improved to 2-0 overall behind five different Flying Dutchmen punched-in goals.

Two of them netted two goals apiece: freshman Jackson Mindling (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) and senior Thomas DeVries (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian),

Head coach David Blahnik loved to see his team play a complete game from start to finish. The Flying Dutchmen outshot LeTourneau (0-2) by a 28-3 margin.

"We're happy with how we played for the total 90 minutes," Blahnik said. "We've challenged the guys a lot. We've said we played a lot of really good 80- and 85-minute games in the last two years. We wanted to see a complete 90, and I think we were pretty close to that tonight."

Sophomore Evan Morrison (Canton, Michigan / Canton HS) opened the scoring in the 11th minute, putting in a right-footed shot from inside the goal area shortly after a corner kick. Hope finished the game with 10 corners without allowing any to LeTourneau.

Mindling scored his first two goals of the season before the half, with assists from fifth-year senior Matt Wimmer (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Detroit Jesuit) and sophomore Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central), in the 24th and 38th minutes, respectively.

In the second half, junior Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) was first to strike after chipping the ball over the LeTourneau goalkeeper in the 53rd minute.

Freshman forward Ryker Corstange (Richland, Michigan / Gull Lake) followed in the 63rd minute with a right-footed goal. Mindling drew the assist.

DeVries, Hope's leading goal scorer in 2023, netted both of his goals two minutes apart beginning in the 76th minute.

The Flying Dutchmen only allowed a single shot on goal, which was saved by senior Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community).

The Flying Dutchmen now will prepare for a road test in Ohio next weekend against two teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25.

Hope plays at No. 15 Ohio Northern on Friday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. and No. 23 Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 6 p.m.
