Ryker Corstange Pushes Ninth-Ranked Men's Soccer Past No. 21 Chicago

Freshman Ryker Corstange didn't miss his chance to deliver in a big moment for the ninth-ranked Hope College men's soccer team.

The forward from Richland, Michigan (Gull Lake HS) propelled the Flying Dutchmen to a 1-0 victory at No. 21 University of Chicago by scoring in the 19th minute.

Corstange's second goal of the season sent Hope to a second consecutive 1-0 victory vs. Chicago. The Flying Dutchmen beat then-third-ranked Chicago, 1-0, last season at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope also wrapped up non-league play with an 8-1-1 overall record. It's the Flying Dutchmen's best 10-game record since a 9-1 start to the 2018 season.

Head coach David Blahnik said Corstange "has been grinding all season and creating a lot of opportunities for his teammates."

"We knew it was only a matter of time before he scored an extremely big goal for us. He got the start tonight because we knew he could pressure their center backs aggressively and find a way to get on a ball and hit an amazing shot. He did exactly that. He has been more than deserving a great game-winning goal like that. We are happy for him."

Hope made Corstange's timely unassisted goal stand up.

Chicago (5-4) outshot the Flying Dutchmen by a 7-2 margin during the second half and 11-8 for the game.

Senior goalkeeper Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) made three saves in each half for Hope.

"An incredible and gutsy team effort tonight," Blahnik said. "Chicago is one of the most talented passing teams in the country and incredibly difficult to beat on the road. I am proud of our team for earning a shutout victory against a team that does not stop coming at you offensively."

The Flying Dutchmen next will play on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. at Calvin University in the MIAA opener for both teams.

Hope's match at Anderson University (Indiana) on Tuesday, Oct. 1, has been canceled because Anderson needed to adjust its schedule to accommodate a league game following a weather postponement.
