Men's Basketball Fends Off Kalamazoo Comeback for 3-0 MIAA Start

The Hope College men's basketball team made it out of the Kalamazoo College Hornets' nest behind a stellar first-half defensive effort and a collective offensive effort down the stretch.

The Flying Dutchmen held on for an 81-71 road victory on Wednesday that kept them tied atop the MIAA standings.

Hope (8-6, 3-0 MIAA) gave up 18 first-half points and built a 40-18 halftime lead.

Kalamazoo rallied behind voluminous free-throw shooting to pull within three points at 65-62. The Flying Dutchmen countered with points from center Gabe Quillan, guard Justice Mims, guard Marcus Wourman and forward Simon Neuhaus over the final 5 ½ minutes.

The Flying Dutchmen are tied for first place with Trine University and Calvin University after extending their winning streak to a season-high three games.

Sophomore Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan / Hart HS) led Hope with a season-high 20 points. The forward also dished out a team-best four assists and grabbed nine rebounds.

Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) recorded his third double-double of the season with 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Wourman (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) contributed 15 points, including seven of the final 5:05.

Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) added 10 points, five of which came during the final 3:46.

Hope did not allow Kalamazoo (7-7, 0-3 MIAA) to make a 3-pointer in 18 attempts.

The Hornets threatened by getting to the line and making 23-of-29 second-half free throws. Kalamazoo's 53 points after halftime were more than the Flying Dutchmen allowed in each of the previous two full MIAA games.

Bradley Ezuika topped the Hornets with a game-high 23 points. Lukas Broadsword and Caleb Caul finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Hope's next game is Saturday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. vs. Adrian College at DeVos Fieldhouse.
