Nationally-Ranked Women's Basketball Pushes Win Streak vs. Kalamazoo to 71 Games

For the 71st consecutive time, the nationally-ranked Hope College women's basketball team avoided the sting of losing to the Kalamazoo College Hornets.

The Flying Dutch continued a winning streak dating back to the 1993-94 season with a 97-43 victory at Kalamazoo on Wednesday.

Hope, ranked No. 19 by D3hoops.com and No. 24 in the Women's Basketball Coaches NCAA Division III poll, improved to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in MIAA play. 

The Flying Dutch's 97 points were their second-highest total of the season. Hope scored 99 during a season-opening victory against Wilmington College (Ohio).

Freshman Maddie Petroelje topped the Flying Dutch with 15 points, her second-highest total of the season and the fifth time she hit double digits for Hope. Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville HS) shot 55.9% from the field (5-9) with a team-best two 3-pointers.

Senior Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) chipped in 12 points while making all four field-goal attempts, including one 3-pointer.

Freshman Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) also reached double figures with 10 points. 

Senior Brooklyn Robak (Clarkston, Michigan / Our Lady of the Lakes) and junior Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) scored eight points apiece.

Hope shot 52.2% from the field while holding Kalamazoo to 31.4% shooting.

The Flying Dutch led the final 38 minutes of the game after using a 12-2 run to take an 18-6 first-quarter lead. Hope pulled ahead, 40-15, by halftime.

Guard Ruby Hogan netted a team-high points for Kalamazoo (5-10, 0-6 MIAA).

Hope's next game is Saturday, Jan. 18, at 1 p.m. at Alma College.
