Women's Basketball Marches Past Olivet, Leah Richards Ties DeVos Fieldhouse Steals Record

Freshman Leah Richards had a big hand in the latest victory for the nationally-ranked Hope College women's basketball team.

The forward from DeWitt, Michigan (Lansing Catholic HS) tied a DeVos Fieldhouse steals record and recorded her first collegiate double-double during an 82-50 victory against The University of Olivet on Saturday.

Richards finished with a career-high 11 rebounds, 10 points and a career-high seven steals.

In only 19 minutes, 51 seconds, Richards matched Philana Greene's home total for steals vs. Tri-State (now Trine University) in 2008 and Maura McAfee's home output vs. Capital University (Ohio) in 2013.

Hope scored 41 points off 28 Olivet turnovers while giving up only two points off 11 turnovers.

The Flying Dutch — ranked No. 16 by d3hoops.com and No. 22 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll — raised their record to 15-3 overall and 8-1 in MIAA play. Hope remained one game behind MIAA leader Trine University.

Saturday's victory extended the Flying Dutch's winning streak over the Comets to 57 games, their second-longest winning streak against any MIAA opponent.

Hope never trailed after scoring the game's first eight points.

Despite Olivet's first-quarter surge, the Flying Dutch's lead never dipped below five points. The Flying Dutch pulled ahead 26-19 after the first quarter, then 47-26 by halftime.

Senior guard Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow HS) led four Hope players in double figures with 12 points while also grabbing seven rebounds.

Junior forward Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) and freshman forward Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) chipped in 11 points apiece.

Senior guard Olivia Bellows (Lake City, Michigan / Lake City) added nine points.

Olivet (5-13, 2-7 MIAA) received a team-best nine points from Anna Honnen off the bench.

Hope's next game is Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. at Albion College. It is part of a women's and men's doubleheader between the Britons and Hope. The men's game follows at 8 p.m.
