Women's Basketball Rallies at Albion; Maddie Petroelje Nets Season-High 21

Sizzling shooting from Maddie Petroelje and stifling second-half defense propelled the nationally-ranked Hope College women's basketball team to a 72-61, come-from-behind victory at Albion College on Wednesday.

Petroelje, a freshman, buried a season-best five 3-pointers and finished with a season-best 21 points.

The Flying Dutch yielded only 20 second-half points after trailing by as many as eight points during the first half.

Hope — ranked 16th by D3hoops.com and tied for 21st in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll — improved to 16-3 overall and 9-1 in MIAA play. The Flying Dutch extended their winning streak to five games while remaining a game behind Trine University in the MIAA standings.

Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville HS) shot a season-high 80% from the field (8-10), including 83.3% from 3-point range (5-6). 

The forward scored 12 second-half points to help Hope outscore the Britons by a 37-20 margin over the final 20 minutes.

Albion (7-12, 5-5 MIAA) was held to 31.8% second-half field shooting (7-22). The Flying Dutch forced 12 second-half turnovers.

Petroelje's five 3s are the most made by a Flying Dutch player in a game this season.

Petroelje's driving layup with 1 minute, 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter put Hope ahead for good at 52-50.

The 6-1 Petroelje also registered a season-best four steals and blocked two shots.

Two of Petroelje's teammates also scored in double figures.

Senior guard Olivia Bellows (Lake City, Michigan / Lake City) chipped in 17 points after burying a season-high four 3-pointers.

Junior forward Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) chipped in 11 points.

Emma Cooke topped Albion with 19 points.

Hope's next game is Saturday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. in The Rivalry against Calvin University at DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin lost to Trine, 62-59, on Wednesday in Grand Rapids.
