Women's Basketball Steals and Seals 20th Consecutive Victory in The Rivalry

Nationally-ranked Hope delivers down the stretch for a 77-65 win

Freshman Leah Richards and sophomore Terin Maynard took matters into their own hands when a late Knights charge threatened to spoil a remarkable streak in The Rivalry for the Hope College women's basketball team.

The dynamic duo's back-to-back steals and fastbreak points with two-plus minutes remaining sealed a 77-65 Flying Dutch victory vs. Calvin University on Saturday in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 1,825.

Nationally-ranked Hope extended its winning streak over the Knights to 20 games, the second-longest in The Rivalry's history. Calvin won 21 games in a row to open The Rivalry in women's basketball.

The Knights cut Hope's lead to 67-63 before Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic HS) delivered a three-point play — her first points of the game — off her steal, and Maynard (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) followed a jumper in the paint off her steal in a span of 13 seconds.

"I thought we had a great response," head coach Brian Morehouse said. "[Calvin is] a great team, very well-coached. When they cut it down, it wasn't so much a coaching move [that kept Hope ahead for the win]. It was the players' resilience and their unconditional love for each other paying dividends down the stretch. I thought we locked in on defense and got us a couple of key steals."

Scoring 29 points off 19 Calvin turnovers, Hope improved to 17-3 overall and 10-1 in MIAA play.

The Flying Dutch, who remained one game behind league-leading Trine University in the league standings, are ranked 16th in this week's D3hoops.com poll and 22nd in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association rankings.

Hope also trimmed the Knights' lead in The Rivalry to three games at 71-68.

Maynard topped the Flying Dutch with season highs in points (14) and steals (4) off the bench. The guard also grabbed five rebounds.

Three of Maynard's teammates also scored in double figures: senior guard Olivia Bellows (Lake City, Michigan / Lake City) with 13, senior guard Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) with 12 and freshman guard Anna Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) with 11.

Senior center Courtney Lee (Fishers, Indiana / Heritage Christian) chipped in a season-high eight points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Freshman forward Maddie Petroelje (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) also scored eight points.

Leah Richards also pulled down eight rebounds and recorded four steals. Garner also collected seven rebounds.

Calvin (11-9, 7-4 MIAA) received a game-high 15 points from Katelyn LaRue and 10 apiece from three of her teammates: Valerie Dirkse, Hannah Sall and Sophie Sensenig.

Hope's next game is Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. at Saint Mary's College.
