Men's Basketball Edged at Albion

A layup in the final second handed the Hope College men's basketball team a 76-74 loss at Albion College on Wednesday.

Junior guard Marcus Wourman (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing HS) and sophomore forward Parker Hovey (Shelby, Michigan / Hart) scored 16 points apiece to lead the Flying Dutchmen.

Senior center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) added 13 points.

Freshman forward Charles Howell (Cadillac, Michigan / Cadillac) recorded career-highs with seven rebounds and three assists.

The game featured nine tie scores and eight lead changes.

After being tied, 33-33, at halftime, Hope trailed for much of the second half, including by as much as six points. The Flying Dutchmen rallied to take a 74-73 lead on a Hovey 3-pointer with 2 minutes, 3 seconds remaining.

Hope (9-9, 4-3 MIAA) missed its final three shots, including a layup with seven seconds remaining.

Albion tied the score at 74-74 when Kurtis Rhodes split his free-throw attempts with 1:34 remaining. Rhodes missed a layup in the closing seconds, but AJ Barden grabbed the rebound and scored with six-tenths of a second remaining.

After a timeout, the Flying Dutchmen attempted a desperation full-court heave but could not get a shot off.

Albion (8-10, 3-4 MIAA) received a team-high 16 points from Dwayne Ray. Barden finished with 12.

Hope's next game is Saturday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m. at MIAA leader Calvin in The Rivalry.
