Men's Soccer Strikes Early, Fends Off Olivet

The Hope College men's soccer team made an early strike stand up this time, earning a 1-0 victory at The University of Olivet on Saturday in the Flying Dutchmen's first MIAA road test of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Morgan stopped four shots for the Flying Dutchmen after junior forward Seth Walters scored 10½ minutes into the match.

Hope improved to 1-0-1 in MIAA play and evened its overall record at 5-5-2.

"We knew it would be a tough game, a league opponent, on the road," head coach David Blahnik said. "Olivet played incredibly hard. We knew we had to defend well and stay consistent. It wasn't always pretty, but we knew we needed to get here with a win and get back home."

Hope's next match is Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. against Kalamazoo College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Proceeds from the event will fund internships for Hope students at the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids, which conducts cutting-edge biomedical research and offers science education. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the Hope College Ticket Office online or on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. by phone at 616-395-7890 or in person at 100 East 8th St.

Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) scored in back-to-back games for the second time this season. His first-half goal on Tuesday earned the Flying Dutchmen a 1-1 draw against Calvin University.

Against Olivet, Walters took a pass from sophomore Michael Dietz (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) at the top of the box and fired a blast inside the lower near post from 18 yards out.

"It was a great cut-in and a phenomenal shot," Blahnik said.

The goal was the fifth of the season for Walters and the 24th of his career. Walters passed Tyler Basler for 20th all-time among Hope goal scorers. Basler had 23 between 2001-04.

The Flying Dutchmen doubled up Olivet on shots, 18-9, including recording 10 of the second half's 13 shots.

Morgan (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) posted Hope's fourth shutout of the season.

Keeper Nicholas Van Port Fleet made six saves for the Comets (1-5-2, 0-2-0 MIAA).
