No. 12 Volleyball Savors Purple Community Game Opportunity, Victory

Many hands contributed to a victorious and meaningful Tuesday night for the 12th-ranked Hope College volleyball team.

The Flying Dutch honored family and friends before the Purple Community Game, benefiting Van Andel Institute, at DeVos Fieldhouse, then defeated Kalamazoo College in three sets (25-14, 25-22, 25-17).

Van Andel Institute, based in Grand Rapids, aims to improve human health through biomedical research and science education. Purple Community is a grassroots fundraising program whose dedicated volunteers support the institute's mission.

This fall, Hope is hosting three Purple Community events: volleyball, women's soccer and men's soccer games. The Purple Community men's soccer game is Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. vs. Kalamazoo.

"It was an honor to be able to participate and (I'm) thankful that Van Andel Institute is doing what they're doing," head coach Becky Schmidt said. "The opportunity to have partnerships with Hope students through their internship programs is incredible."

Hope (17-5, 4-0 MIAA) received kills from 13 different contributors against Kalamazoo.

Sophomore middle blocker Olivia Wyma (Hartland, Wisconsin / Arrowhead) led the attack with 10 kills.

Senior outside hitter Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) chipped in seven kills and nine digs.

Senior outside hitter Kate Luurtsema (Alto, Michigan / South Christian) added five kills.

Freshman libero Amelia Gagnon (Belmont, Michigan / Grand Rapids West Catholic) totaled a season-high 17 digs.

Senior setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) collected 33 assists against the Hornets (9-13, 1-3 MIAA).

"Give Kalamazoo credit. They played some really aggressive defense, and some things that we are used to having hit the floor, they kept alive," Schmidt said. "All of our players work really hard to help make our team the best team it can be. That includes the folks who are in the starting lineup and those who aren't. You get an opportunity to show some gratitude for their efforts, and it's really exciting to see the faces of everybody else and how excited they are to see their teammates shine."

Hope's next match is Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at Albion College, which is 18-2 overall and 3-0 in MIAA play.
