Women's Soccer Strikes Twice in the Second Half, Wins at Adrian

Playing for the first time in eight days, the Hope College women's soccer team used a barrage of second-half shots to overpower Adrian College and earn a 2-0 victory Wednesday night.

The Flying Dutch scored twice after halftime, with goals 11 minutes apart from junior Halle Barnard and sophomore Adelyn Raad.

Hope outshot the Bulldogs 15-3 during the final 45 minutes of play.

The Orange and Blue improved to 10-3-2 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA, good for second place. It is Hope's fifth consecutive season with double-digit wins.

Barnard (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) broke through for the game-winning goal in the 70th minute.

The forward blasted a shot into the lower left corner of the net from about 18 yards out.

Senior Lauren Ellinger (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) recorded the assist.

It was Barnard's fourth goal of the season, a career high.

In the 82nd minute, Raad (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) launched an angled shot into a similar spot as Barnard's, but from 25 yards out. It was the defender's second goal of the season.

The Flying Dutch finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) made three saves. Adrian fell to 6-9-1 overall and 3-3 in MIAA matches.

Hope has two regular-season games remaining, both at home.

The next one is Saturday, Oct. 25, at noon against Kalamazoo College on Senior Day at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. The Flying Dutch can clinch the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the MIAA Tournament with a win.

Tickets can be purchased in advance through the Hope College Ticket Office or at the gate.
