Men's Soccer Soars Past Adrian, One Win from MIAA Title Repeat

Hope can clinch an outright MIAA championship on Wednesday at home

A pair of well-executed goals and a complete team effort carried the Hope College men's soccer team to a 2-0 road victory over Adrian College on Saturday night at Docking Stadium.

With a fifth consecutive victory, Hope remains atop the MIAA standings at 5-0-1 (16 points).

The Flying Dutchmen, who are 9-5-2 overall, sit ahead of Albion College, who's in second with a 5-1 league record (15 points). Calvin University is in third place with a 4-1-1 record (13 points).

Hope concludes the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. against Trine University at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Tickets can be purchased in advanced through the Hope College Ticket Office or at the gate one hour before the match.

At Adrian, the Flying Dutchmen struck first in the 27th minute when junior Evan Morrison (Canton, Michigan / Canton) delivered a bending free kick from near the corner flag to the back post, where freshman Jack Lowman (Novi, Michigan / Northville) rose above the defense and headed home the go-ahead goal for his third of the season.

Hope doubled its lead late in the second half as junior Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) created space on the dribble and lofted a perfectly placed cross to the back side.

Senior Matt Davidson (Grand Ledge, Michigan / Grand Ledge) met it in stride, finishing out of the air with his head for his third goal of the year in the 82nd minute.

Defensively, the Flying Dutchmen were rock solid, limiting Adrian to no shots in the match and earning the shutout behind sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Morgan (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) and a stout back line.

"Tonight was a great overall team performance," head coach David Blahnik said. "As a coach this is all we can really ask for from the guys — to be collectively committed and passionate for the entire 90 minutes."
